I am unsure why I was so nervous and experiencing anxiety as well as Imposter Syndrome before yesterday’s 2026 NASW CA Conference. I was prepared. I know my subject matter. I have public speaking skills. I can even sing in front of a crowd of people without getting nervous! Perhaps it is because this was truly my first time presenting to a group of colleagues who didn't know me, and I feared how they would perceive me, my knowledge, and my research.
I was wrong to be fearful.
Here’s what I realized.
Like me, everyone was there to improve their own knowledge and practice. Everyone was compassionate, inquisitive, and open to hearing new ideas. So am I. No one judged me for blanking on a few words when my nerves were on edge. People were gracious and gave me space to finish my thoughts and get my words out however I needed to convey the message (yup, this sometimes involved a curse word or two).
Ultimately, I am proud of myself!
I am pleased with the presentation that I gave at this conference.
While I may feel like an imposter at times, coming out on the other side of things CONSISTENTLY helps keep that imposter feeling at bay.
If you’ve been feeling this way, look in the mirror and remember that your accomplishments, knowledge, and hard work mean you belong.
You are not an imposter!
Be kind to yourself.
Be kind to others.
